The Battle Within: Why You Feel Pulled in Two Directions as a Christian

Feb 02, 2026

Have you ever felt like there's a war going on inside you? One part of you wants to pray, serve, and follow God — and another part wants to scroll, snap, and settle for less. If that sounds familiar, you're not broken. You're in a battle. And the Bible has a lot to say about it.

In Galatians 5, the Apostle Paul describes a spiritual reality that every believer experiences but not everyone understands: the battle between the Spirit and the sinful nature. Understanding this battle is the key to walking in the freedom Christ has already won for you.

Two Forces at War Inside Every Believer

Paul doesn't sugarcoat it. In Galatians 5:17, he writes:

"The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions." (NLT)

Did you catch that? Two forces. Constantly fighting. This isn't just a matter of willpower or self-discipline. Paul is describing something deeper than a guilty conscience — this is a real, ongoing spiritual conflict between the Holy Spirit living in you and the pull of your old sinful nature.

If you've ever wondered, "Why do I keep doing what I don't want to do?" — this is why. It's the battle within.

It's More Than a Cartoon on Your Shoulder

Most of us grew up with the image of a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other — each one whispering what we should do next. It's a fun picture (and it made for some great movie moments), but what Paul describes in Galatians 5 goes far beyond a battle of conscience.

This isn't just your brain debating between a salad and tacos. This is a spiritual tug-of-war — one force prompting you, directing you, and leading you toward the things of God, and another force pulling you, drifting you, and constantly yanking you away from everything God wants for your life.

The sinful nature doesn't just tempt you. It fights you. And if you don't recognize the battle, you'll lose ground without even knowing why.

Set Free — But Staying Free Is the Real Challenge

Here's where it gets personal. If you've placed your faith in Jesus Christ, you have been set free. That's the gospel. That's the good news. Christ has broken the power of sin and death over your life.

But — and this is important — being set free and staying free are two different things.

Freedom in Christ isn't a one-time event you never think about again. It's a daily walk. It's a moment-by-moment choice to follow the Spirit's leading instead of giving in to the pull of the flesh. Paul is clear: when you are directed by the Spirit, you are no longer under obligation to the old way of doing things — the rule-keeping, box-checking, performance-based religion that so many of us default to.

You're free. But staying free requires understanding the battle and knowing which voice to follow.

You Don't Have to Fight Alone

The beauty of this passage — and the hope in it — is that the Holy Spirit is actively fighting for you. You're not white-knuckling your way through the Christian life. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives inside you, giving you desires that are opposite to what the sinful nature wants.

Your job isn't to win the war on your own. Your job is to yield to the Spirit, to walk in step with Him, and to recognize when the sinful nature is trying to pull you off course.

Here's the bottom line: the battle within is real, but it's not hopeless. Christ has already secured the victory. Now it's up to us to live in the freedom He's given — one choice, one moment, one step at a time.
